Mahabharata is one of the most important text of ancient Indian. So many vyuha are formed in the Mahabharata Kurukshetra war. One of the most important and best vyuha formation is chakravyuha. Let us know more about chakravyuha.
How Chakravyuha formed?
In Mahabharata, Chakravyuha was formed by
“Dhronacharya” who was the master of military strategist in Kauravas side. This
strategy was formed on 13th day of Kurukshetra war. The main
objectives of kauravas to perform chakravyuha formation is to capture
Yudhishthira, who was the leader of pandavas side, as a prisoner in war. As per
the early plan of kauravas, Arjuna was distracted into another battle,
Abhimanyu along with other pandavas were trying hard to protect Yudhishthira from
kauravas. Krishna, Arjuna, Dhrona, Dhrupada are the some who can break the
chakravyuha formation. Dhrupada fought on the side of pandavas. So,
Jeyathrathan on kauravas side made Dhrupada unconscious in the battlefield.
How
Abhimanyu getting trapped?
Lacking of Arjuna, Krishna, Dhrupada Abhimanyu
and other pandavas were clueless on how to defend against chakravyuha
formation. Under this difficult situation, Abhimanyu comes forward and forced
other pandavas to let him break the chakravyuha strategy. Others were also
allowed him to enter. As soon as the Abhimanyu break the first layer,
jeyathrathan ordered to shut down the entry point of chakravyuha to block the
entry of other pandavas. Abhimanyu fought single handedly with brave and valor
against kauravas but tremendously killed by the tactical attack of them.
The chakravyuha- ‘’spinning wheel formation”
Chakra means “spinning wheel” and vyuha means
“strategy or formation”. Chakravyuha means maze arrangement of soldiers keep
moving in the form of spinning wheel. It is a multitier defensive formation
that looks like a disc when viewed from the top. The warriors at each
interleaving position would be increasingly tough position to fight. As per the
strategy, it can capture a any stationary object or moving object or person.
Chakravyuha was one of the best defensive formation as well as offensive
formation one in which the whole arrangement of soldiers was continuously moves
across the battle field. Simultaneously it also attacks the invading warriors
also. It was like the spinning death machine that kills everything that came on
his path. It rotates along the axis with each layer with different speed to
make the defense greater. It is similar to the typhoon that occurs on the
battle field. So, it is important to stop the strategy of chakravyuha formation
for opposition otherwise it led them to defeat in the war. Fighting inside the
deadly wheel formation makes the warriors damaging mentally and physically so
it is important to keep the mind and body strong to break the formation.
Thousand of soldiers were killed in the short span of time due to psychological
impact of rotating formation.
Chakravyuha layers:
There are 7 layers in the chakravyuha
formation. Level 7 is the innermost layer consisting of strongest soldiers and
commanders. Soldiers at the inner level are physically and psychologically
strong compared to intermediate level and outer level soldiers. At the center
of chakravyuha commanders and best warriors are waiting to kill the invading
warriors. Weak and strong soldiers are strategically mixed at each of the layer
to create more damage to enemy. Each layer has one opening that was protected
by skilled warrior of enemy with his personal troop. Role of the outer layer
soldiers is to prevent the entry of warrior to that layer. If the layer is
broken the aim of the outer layer is to prevent the further more entries of
enemies, not to attack warriors those who have already reach the inner layer.
The commander has to identify the soldiers who will form this formation.
Infantry, cavalries and archers of chakravyuha
Infantry formed the outer layer of chakravyuha
because they are tightly massed and does not allow the enemies to reach the
inner layer very easily. Skilled archers at chariots, cavalries and elephants
are formed on the inner layer. They would easily fire down the arrows over the
head of infantry to kill the invading enemy. This formation makes the safety of
infantry from the enemy warriors who are trying to breach the chakravyuha. To break
this formation strategy needs to make the archers engaged. So that they are
busy in defending themselves instead o attacking enemies.
Deadliest military formation- why?
Soldiers at the outer layer are responsible for
start the outward oscillatory motion by taking the step to left. By triggering
the chain reactions each soldier in the same ring will take a step to the left
to take up the position emptied by the front soldier. Soldier in the next ring
will make the step-in opposite direction of first layer and starts the
oscillatory movement by taking the step to right. By triggering the chain
reaction each soldier in the same ring will take a step to right to take up the
position emptied by the front soldier. So, the seven layers of circles are
rotating alternatively in clockwise and anti-clockwise movement direction. So,
the enemies lost themselves in which circle they are and also lost their
physical strength. So, the actual strength of the inner ring cannot be
estimated from outside because of this formation.
How to maintain the coordination movement in
each layer?
Answer is music.
Formation and direction of rotation is keep
changing based on the pre indicated signals and commands issued by the
commander. Movement of soldiers is controlled by the drum beats which makes the
soldiers to move uniformly in particular direction. This is done because all
the soldiers are from different kingdom and not practicing under same
commander. Killing the drummer also could be the one of the easy ways to break
the vyuha but killing a drummer is not ethical in war. If any soldiers in the
form gets killed his position is covered by the sliding motion of the soldiers following
him till the space left by him is completely lodged.
Getting trapped inside chakravyuha:
When a warrior tries to penetrate it breaching
the layer, it is not easy to create the gap to enter, since it was closed by
the intermediate soldiers immediately. If somehow, he is successful in
penetrating the one layer the warrior would end up in fighting the stronger
soldier in the innermost layer. If he is successful in penetrating another layer,
the warrior would end up in fighting strong ferocious warrior. As a result, the
warrior enters deep and deep he is getting tired both mentally and physically
and finally got killed by the enemy.
How to break the chakravyuha formation?
To break the chakravyuha and reaching the
center without being tired needs a warrior to find short route to the center as
well as it demands the warrior to be superior in the skills. One needs to break
the layer to reach the center is to travel along the maze. Most warriors would
think that breaching the layer by killing the enemies Infront of him. No longer
has the warrior killed his place is completely occupied and instantly covered
up by the soldiers in the right. Before entering the chakravyuha the warrior
must know the space emptied earlier occupied by the group of intermediate
soldiers thereby making impossible.
Mathematical way to break the vyuha:
Number of layers in chakravyuha is seven. At
the first layer, assumed it in the fraction as 1/7. It will end up in the result
of 0.142857142857142857… The decimal 142857 repeats continuously. Similar when
the second layer the fraction would be 2/7. It will end up in
0.285714285714285714… The decimal 285714 repeats continuously. the warrior also
two times to fought with enemies to break the layer. similarly, for third
fourth and fifth layer. This kind of relationship will occur for all the
layers. This can break only when the warrior fought with 7 times the enemy in
the last layer to make the result 7/7 which is equal to 1.
This chakravyuha needs more human to perform
this formation. The rate of destruction would also be higher but in same way
very difficult to break. It would result in loss of lives in more number. So
these vyuha is further not implemented.
